Mean Sea Level Anomalies

anom2008_05.png

A mean sea level anomaly occurs when the 5-month average of the interannual variation is greater than 0.1 meters (4 inches) or less than -0.1 meters. The map displays stations with a positive anomaly in red and stations with a negative anomaly in blue and reveals the regional extent of anomalous water level conditions in the coastal ocean which can indicate anomalous water temperatures, salinities, mean monthly winds, atmospheric pressures, and/or coastal currents. The drop-down menu can be used to retrieve maps for previous months going back to January 1997. The regional extent of the 1997-1998 El Niño and the 2000-2001 La Niña events on the U.S. coastline can be observed.

Most anomalies: December 1997 January 2001 April 2002 December 2002 December 2004
